13 December 2001- submitted by Steve Sweet

Thursday the weather improved and we were able to field a terrestrial sampling team. A total of 68 terrestrial samples were collected from around McMurdo Station. The weather was building throughout the day and by the time we had finished sampling, the winds were gusting to 35-40 miles per hour. Earlier in the week intercontinental flight operations were begun at Pegasus Field (see photos courtesy of Dave Berry). Pegasus Field will be used for landing wheeled C-130 planes allowing the ski equipped C-130 planes to concentrate on continental flight operations exclusively. The 50th Airlift Squadron out of Little Rock Arkansas will be flying three flights a week to and from Christchurch. We are scheduled on one of these flights next week.
