Station MT5

GYRE arrived on Station MT5 at 19:15 GMT on June 3,2000 and we finished all sampling at 16:13 GMT on June 4, 2000. The boxcores and the pictures taken by the digital underwater camera all indicated the presence of pteropod ooze on the bottom of this 2280-m deep station. The digital underwater camera also captured images of an anemone, sea cucmbers, and sea pens. One can see in the attached picture (A) that the trawl consisted mainly of trash made up of rock, iron stone, plastics, glass, tar, and other solid hydrocarbons. We did also retrieve some shells, invertebrates, and fish including a Synaphobranchus sp. that David Methven from Memorial University of New Foundland is examinimg in the attached photo (B).
