Station MT3

Gyre arrived on Station MT3 at 10:25 GMT on June 16, 2000 and we finished all sampling at 22:09 GMT on June 16, 2000. The station was originally located on the northern boundary of a discontinued industrial waste dumping site, so it was relocated slightly to the north of the original position in the Mississippi Canyon. The attached photo (A) is of the five geocores obtained by the boxcore at a depth of 1000 meters. Hydrogen sulfide, the end product of sulfate reduction, is concentrated in the dark bottom layer of the geocore. Hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfides are responsible for the rotten egg smell in anoxic sediments. The top layer is of special interest because a majority of the fauna live in this organic portion of the sediment column and are responsible for the bioturbation and microbial gardening; two important processes responsible for distributing oxygen and nutrients below the sediment-water interface.
