Station C1

Gyre arrived on Station C1 at 4:43 GMT on May 30, 2000 and we finished all sampling at 13:28 GMT on May 30, 2000. This was the first station on the second leg and 250 m in depth. We encountered a large Trichodesmium bloom 36 nautical miles from shore. The mud in the boxcores was distinct from other stations due to a 2-cm layer of very rich dark mud on top of the boxcore mud. As we were sampling a large school of amberjacks feeding on flying fish and squid surrounded the boat. The underwater digital camera produced good images including one of a crab scurrying across the bottom. We also had a successful trawl even though we were limited in maneuverability due to pipelines to the east and a shipping channel to the south of the station. A sea robin was caught in the trawl as portrayed by the attached photo.
