GYRE arrived on Station W5 at 3:29 GMT on May 16, 2000 and we finished all sampling at 01:58 GMT on May 17, 2000. This station is located in Keathley Canyon and is about 2750 m in depth. The sediment collected with the boxcores was rather coarse and dense with tubes. We don't believe that the trawl net hit bottom because we did not see any mud on the heavy steel doors of the trawl net and the catch revealed only mid-water organisms. The trawl catch included one eel larva (leptocephalus), one juvenile flounder, 3 midwater shrimp, and 4 midwater fish.
